🌟 Staff Spotlight: Maria Guzman, Lowell Elementary Counselor
At Lowell Elementary, Ms. Guzman is more than a school counselor—she’s a role model, a motivator, and a compassionate guide for every student she meets. As a proud graduate of Waterloo Schools, her journey has come full circle. She now stands in the role she once wished she had as a student.
“My ‘why’ is deeply personal,” she shares. “As a student in Waterloo Schools, I didn’t have someone who looked like me. I want to be the person I needed back then. I want to show ALL students that they can achieve their goals, no matter their skin color or the challenges they face.”
In her role, Ms. Guzman connects with every student at Lowell, fostering relationships that are rooted in trust and understanding. Whether she’s leading classroom guidance sessions, working with small groups, or meeting with students one-on-one, she focuses on building a safe and welcoming environment.
She takes pride in helping students grow not only academically but emotionally, guiding them through social-emotional learning and celebrating their achievements along the way. Her passion shines in every interaction. “I love seeing my students thrive,” she says. “I make sure to tell them how much I missed them and how glad I am to see them every day.”
This year, Ms. Guzman is on a mission to tackle chronic absenteeism at Lowell. Working with the attendance team, she’s finding creative ways to celebrate students who come to school consistently. By focusing on the importance of attendance during classroom guidance lessons, she’s helping students and their families understand how being present is the first step toward success.
For Ms. Guzman, the work she does with elementary students feels personal. “I see a little bit of myself in each of my students,” she explains. “Living life through my inner child brings me so much joy. I love helping students feel welcome, safe, and loved while they’re here at school.”
When asked to describe herself in one word, Ms. Guzman chooses #Authentic. “I bring my whole self—Latina, first-generation, and all my experiences—to this role. I want my students to see that they can be who they are and that there’s beauty in being unique.”
