🎓 East High Senior Spotlight: Imara Miller 🧡🖤
From the classroom to the student council, Imara Miller has made her mark at East High with creativity, determination, and heart. As graduation approaches, this talented senior is setting her sights on the next big chapter—attending the University of Iowa to study business. But her ambitions don’t stop there. Whether it's writing, directing, or exploring other artistic paths, Imara is determined to be a creative voice in the world.
.
Imara’s journey through East has been one of growth and discovery. “East has helped me understand what it means to be committed in school and in life in general,” she shares. “I’m grateful for the teachers and friends who have helped me succeed and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone.” Her experiences have taught her the value of connection, commitment, and continual growth.
.
Some of her fondest memories come from her time in student council—creating posters, planning events, and working alongside classmates to make East a more positive, fun place. “I’ve also made some of my best friends here who share my determination,” she says. “I’m grateful I get to see them every day.”

🎊Teacher Feature: Don Waltenberger, Criminal Justice Instructor – Waterloo Career Center
For Don Waltenberger, teaching at the Waterloo Career Center isn’t just a job—it’s a return to his passion. 💙
.
After working in academic administration at a community college, Don wanted to be back in the classroom, sharing his real-world criminal justice experience with students. So when the opportunity arose to teach at the WCC, it was the perfect match. 🕵️♂️📚
.
“I wanted to return to teaching Criminal Justice courses,” he says. “The timing was perfect, and I made the jump.”
.
Now, as a Criminal Justice instructor, Don brings learning to life through hands-on activities, heated classroom debates 🔥, and visits from local law enforcement professionals 🚓. Students dive into complex topics like Supreme Court decisions ⚖️, Restorative Justice, and crime scene processing 🔍—all while learning from someone who’s lived it.
.
“I often use a student-led teaching approach,” Don shares. “Students present material, create test questions, and take ownership of their learning. It keeps them engaged and helps them build confidence.” 💪
.
But for Don, the heart of teaching lies in relationships. ❤️
.
“Getting to know my students—who they are outside of class—is just as important as teaching the material. When students feel comfortable, they’re more open to learning.”
.
From day one, Don felt welcomed by the Waterloo Schools community. “The support from the WCC staff and district has been incredible. It’s a great place for any teacher looking to make a meaningful impact.” 🙌
.
His journey is guided by two values:
#worklife – “Teaching in this field at Waterloo Schools has been a joy and the career change I needed.”
#compassion – “We all come from different places. It’s important to meet students where they are and show compassion in every interaction.” 💬🤝
.
We’re proud to have educators like Mr. Waltenberger shaping the future, one student at a time. 🎓✨

How very nice for the students. Great job Mrs. Nieman!
🎓✨ Senior Spotlight: Ben Ritter | West High Wahawk ✨🎓
Ben Ritter is ready to take on the world after graduation! This proud Wahawk will be attending Loras College, where he plans to study Creative Media and Criminal Justice — a perfect blend of his interests in storytelling, creativity, and serving others.
.
Reflecting on his time in Waterloo Schools, Ben is grateful not only for the academic preparation but also for the career exploration opportunities he found through the Waterloo Career Center. "The Career Center let me explore so many different careers — my toes have been dipped into many possibilities," he shared. Those experiences helped him build a clearer vision for his future and gave him a head start toward his goals.
.
One of Ben’s favorite memories from West High is being part of the Homecoming Court, a special moment where he got to celebrate with friends and classmates. If he had to sum up his time at West in one word, Ben would simply say: "Money."
.
To the underclassmen following in his footsteps, Ben offers this advice:
"Be involved and do not take a single moment for granted or regret any decisions."
.
Congratulations, Ben! Your Wahawk family is cheering you on as you chase your dreams. ❤️
