Here at the Waterloo School District we are committed to providing our students with the tools and resources they need to become the best version of themselves. With over 10,000 students, across 21 campuses, our district remains one of the largest in the state of Iowa, providing education for grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth. Our district currently encompasses all of Waterloo, Evansdale, Elk Run Heights, Gilbertville, and parts of Cedar Falls in addition to other unincorporated areas within Black Hawk County.
We are proud to continue being one of the leading employers across the Cedar Valley with approximately 1,700 employees throughout the district. (851 full-time equivalent [FTE] professional employees and 558 FTE support staff.) Out of all of our incredible teaching staff members, roughly 40 percent of the district’s educators hold advanced degrees.
As authorized under Section 274.1 of the Iowa Code, the Waterloo Schools District is an independent unit of government, maintaining a governing body of a seven-member Board of Education. Our board member elections are staggered, with three-year terms each. We require that four of the board’s members reside within the school district, while the remaining three are elected at large. Additionally, the daily administrative and academic executive functions of the district are the responsibility of the district’s Superintendent, who is appointed by the board.
In order to provide students with transportation, on-site nursing services, and driver’s education the district contracts with the organizations listed below.
- First Student – Student Transportation
- Black Hawk County – Nursing Services
- Drive Tek – Driver’s Education
The Waterloo School District also serves nearly 1.5 million meals each year through our six District Food Service locations.
With student enrichment programs such as Life Labs, the Waterloo Career Center, Success Street, and more, we ensure our students have the support they need to work toward their dreams. Whether they’re looking to continue their education or find a fulfilling career after graduation, our goal with every student is to provide them with a diploma and a plan.
