This year’s business and marketing students collaborated with students across the Waterloo Career Center (WCC) to create a fun-filled Halloween dance complete with spooky music, terrifying treats, and eerie props. Held on Saturday, October, 22, 2022, the dance had a wonderful turn out, with students and staff both dressing up for the occasion.
The student leaders behind this event were Cecelia Dehl, Hannah Wylon, and Fletcher Gerrans. These three students worked to manage the event and its various tangent projects including food by the culinary arts classes, coffins from the construction program, spooky visual and audio effects from the digital arts and programming classes, and more.
Dehl said the experience was challenging, but highly rewarding, showcasing the in’s and out’s of event management within different team environments.
“I think it helped us be more comfortable telling people no, and having a logical reason why,” said Dehl. “It was fun collaborating with the different departments and seeing everybody’s ideas first hand.”
Wylon said the event helped her learn the foundations of project management such as keeping record of group meetings and idea generation, curating project based to-do lists, and maintaining the overall event timeline.
Gerrans primary role was coordinating all the budgeting for the event.
“Everything from the DJ to pencils is recorded in our marketing plan,” said Gerrans “Even if it’s not us directly spending the money, it’s my job to make sure it gets recorded.”
After such a fun-filled celebration, the students are proud of the event they put together, and are excited to start on their next project. In addition to the event, the business and marketing departments are also building out the WCC’s cafe, where they serve snacks and food to hungry students and staff in a relaxed atmosphere.
Elma Perez (pictured below) currently works as the cafe’s dedicated intern, working several hours a week to serve her fellow students and make them feel welcome and at home.
“My favorite thing is seeing everyone at the cafe,” said Perez. “My sophomore year we had a stand which was fun, so I asked to intern once we started the cafe.”
Students, like Ja Fluckes (pictured above) can come relax in between classes at the WCC, play connect four, and destress with seasonal coloring pages. With so much exciting change yet to come, Jill Schares, business & marketing instructor, says the WCC is where to be!
