Whether students are looking to relax with a good book or dive into an assignment, the library is full of resources to help Waterloo Schools students succeed.
East High’s Technology Integration Specialist, Meghan Sullivan, and West High’s IMC Integrationist, Alyssa Bruecken, were full of helpful information about the high schools’ student programs, technology, and winter book recommendations.
“Reading over winter break can give teens an important outlet from everyday stressors and keep their imaginations turning while school is out,” said Sullivan.
Thankfully, all Waterloo Schools students have access to the online resource Discover Destiny which connects them with their school’s library catalog and downloadable e-books and audiobooks through MackinVIA. Sullivan says the system continues operating over winter break for students who are looking for digital reading material while school is out of session.
Throughout the school year, teachers and students rely on several other applications found within Discover Destiny to research academic topics and learn from high-quality online research databases such as JSTOR, Britannica, The New York Times, and more.
Bruecken says the opportunity to learn this research methodology helps students to prepare for their future academic pursuits and enables them to decipher the credibility of various sources.
“Research helps students to develop inquiry skills and seek out answers in a variety of situations using a variety of sources,” said Bruecken.
Additionally, for students who are looking to supplement their online research, Waterloo Schools partners with the Waterloo Public Library to assist students in obtaining local library cards. This partnership opens students up to a wide range of physical materials, as well as a much larger database of e-books and audiobooks through the app, Libby.
