Sylvia Hanson has been volunteering with Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa (JAEIA) for over 12 years, helping students learn about personal finance. As a branch manager at Veridian Credit Union, Hanson, pulls on her first-hand experience, while volunteering in K-5 classrooms.
Hanson attended Elk Run Elementary, Bunger Middle School, and East and West High Schools growing up. She says being able to give back in her own hometown has meant the world to her.
“This is my school district, so being able to impact kids here is something that comes around full circle for me,” said Hanson.
The first class she volunteered with was Kindergarten, highlighting the difference between needs and wants financially. According to Hanson, utilizing interactive games and candy as motivational prizes helps to keep students engaged during the lesson.
“I think it’s very interactive,” said Hanson. “It’s always fun and full of energy. Being able to give them a role model is something I really enjoy.”
At Veridian, employees are encouraged to volunteer with organizations such as JAEIA. Originally, a fellow co-worker recommended it to Hanson as a potential opportunity. Today, she finds herself recommending it to other Veridian employees and community members looking to make an impact in their own backyard.
