WATERLOO, IA— Pending Board approval, both East and West High Schools are thrilled to be welcoming new varsity volleyball coaches to Waterloo Schools for the 2023-2024 school year. Coach Grace Patterson will be coaching for Waterloo East, and Coach Chris Hagness will be coaching for Waterloo West.
About Grace Patterson
Grace is a 2019 graduate from Waterloo West where she played volleyball for four years. In May she will graduate from the University of Northern Iowa with her bachelor’s degree in sports public relations.
“I am so excited to join the Trojan family and continue coaching high school athletes,” said Patterson. “I look forward to continuing to build the program in the new conference. Go Trojans!”
Patterson served as the assistant varsity volleyball coach at Waterloo West for one year and as the head sophomore volleyball coach for two years. She also has served as the head club volleyball coach for numerous years.
“We are excited about coach Patterson stepping into the role as East High’s head volleyball coach. Her experience as a former player and coach at the high school level, as well as club experience, will bring energy and continue to help develop a championship mindset within the volleyball program,” said Tim Moses, Waterloo East athletic director.
About Chris Hagness
Chris Hagness is a Wisconsin native and graduate of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Hagness completed his Ph.D. and residency at Mayo Clinic and has worked for MercyOne Waterloo since 2004. Hagness has operated a volleyball club in Waterloo since 2019, coaching several teams of fifth through twelfth graders.
“I am looking forward to coaching these outstanding ladies and growing the Wahawk program. I have lived and worked next door to West High for 18 years, and am excited to build upon the Wahawk legacy,” said Hagness. “I am most looking forward to building a competitive culture and generating enthusiasm for the volleyball program. We will be hitting the ground running this summer.”
The Wahawks are scheduled to compete in five days of varsity team camps this summer and will host a two-day high school camp on August 1-2, and a three-day camp for fifth through eighth graders on August 14-16. Camps hosted at Waterloo West are open to players from all area schools.
“Coach Hagness has a passion for volleyball, and his past experiences demonstrate that he will develop a structured program that will help our young Wahawks develop on and off the court,” said Tom Ulses, Waterloo West athletic director. “We are excited about bringing Coach Hagness into the Wahawk coaching family.”
