The purpose is to establish nutrition content standards for food and beverages sold on or provided on school grounds during the school day. There is also physical activity requirements for all K-12 students.
What are the Nutrition Regulations?
The nutrition standards started on July 1, 2010.
This regulation includes:
- Restrictions on calories, sodium, saturated fat, trans fat, total fat, sugar, and dietary fiber/whole grain.
- Restrictions for beverages including: milk, 100% juice, water, sports drinks, flavored waters, caffeinated beverages, and soads/carbonated beverages.
- Schools must also offer at least two fruits or non-fried vegetables, with no more than one being a juice option in vending machines, regulated fundraising and vending machines.
