RESIDENTS SUPPORT WATERLOO SCHOOLS WITH SUCCESSFUL VOTE
Waterloo, Iowa – November 5, 2024 – The Waterloo Community School District (WCSD) is thrilled to announce overwhelming community support for the construction of a new high school campus. With 60% of voters approving the bond issuance on November 5, the $165 million project will now move forward, bringing a state-of-the-art high school campus to the current Waterloo Career Center (WCC) location on Katoski Drive.
The project, approved by the WCSD Board of Education earlier this summer, has been in development for months with extensive collaboration between district leadership, INVISION Architecture of Waterloo, and community stakeholders. Since December, WCSD has hosted 14 town hall meetings and work sessions, ensuring transparent dialogue and comprehensive input from community members.
“This project has always been about creating a lasting investment in Waterloo’s future,” said Dr. Jared Smith, Superintendent. “The community’s support tells us we’re moving in the right direction. We’re building more than just a school—we’re creating a place where students can grow, explore their potential, and gain the skills they need to thrive in today’s world.”
The new high school campus, to serve 10th through 12th-grade students, will be co-located with the WCC, making it the only high school in Iowa to offer career and technical education on-site for every student. The project will be funded through the state’s 1% sales tax, known as the Secure an Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE), which supports school infrastructure and property tax relief.
With the public’s vote of confidence, WCSD is prepared to move into the next phase, ensuring all planning and construction proceed with the highest standards. More updates and opportunities for community involvement will be shared as the project advances.
