Waterloo East Speech and Debate
About us
The Waterloo East Speech and Debate team is an extracurricular activity that is open to any student that is enrolled in the Waterloo School District. The team practices from 2:45 to 4:30 on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and other days as scheduled by the coaches. The team is coached by Head Coach TonyDehl, assistant coach Jesse Meyer, and assistant coach Alex Conyers. The team travels to 10-15 tournaments a season and participated in National Forensics League, Iowa Forensics League, and Iowa High School Speech Association events.
About the events
LD Debate– Lincoln Douglass debate is a two person debate that focuses on philosophy and evidence to attack and defend a resolution. This event stresses the good speaking skills, interpersonal communication, research, and advocacy skills. If you want to be a lawyer, LD debate is for you.
Speech– Waterloo East offers 6 NFL speech categories and 12 IHSSA categories that range from persuasive self written speeches, limited time personal belief questions, acting pieces, funny or dramatic interpretation pieces, poetry and prose, radio news broadcasting, and many more. Speech events are a great way to find a topic you feel strongly about and just speak your mind.
PF Debate– PF debate, short for public forum debate, is a team debate where you and a partner take a current event topic and write short debate cases. This debate is presented for a more relaxed atmosphere with less terminology but just as much emphasis on speaking and research.
Our record
Waterloo East has a track record of success. Currently, we have the only LD and PF debate teams in the Cedar Valley. In the regular season, our debate team has a collective win loss record of 62%, the best record of any activity at East High. Our speech team has won or made finals at nearly every tournament we have traveled to this year. Our speech team has qualified students to the IHSSA All State Speech Festival for the last 5 years in a row, a school record. We also have qualified students to the National Forensics League National Tournament 3 times in the last 5 years. Currently, Senior Gabe Evans will be traveling to Birmingham this summer as the East Iowa’s representative in Dramatic Interpretation. Current East High graduates have completed in college speech and debate and now hold the positions as doctors, lawyers, commissioned officers in the US Army, and much more.
